Clay courts for tennis

Sportsurf’s clay court comes with high-quality surfaces. Clay is increasingly becoming the tennis court surface of choice among top training facilities, competition venues and country clubs. Although we feature the construction, renovation and maintenance of clay courts, we also service and construct traditional natural red clay courts. Whether we are building a single tennis court or designing and constructing a multi-court facility, we are committed to providing exceptional clay court surfaces and second-to-none customer service. Clay courts are a bit more common than grass courts, especially in Europe and South America.

The name is slightly deceiving because the surface is not exactly made of clay. Rather, red clay courts are made of crushed brick, and green clay courts are made of metabasaltic. On clay, balls bounce slower and higher  (the complete opposite of grass courts), favoring strong baseline players who play with a lot of topspin. Another core characteristic of clay courts is the ability to slide and hit the ball with still in motion.

Process of installation :

  1. Granular drainage: The 1st layer of court is made up of 2 to 3 inch stones. This layer guarantees the optimization of the drainage. Because the stones are larger than upper layer.
  2. Little granular drainage: This is the second layer which is made up of 0.4 to 0.8 inch stones. This layer filters and ensures the flow of water.
  3. Level the total area of court by a roller. Then start the layer of clay. The type of clay we use is the derivative of grinded bricks.
  4. This is the most important part of the installation. The layer of clay must be compacted and levelled for excellent performance. We must avoid cracking in clay layer.
  5. The last layer is made up of grinded brick which is finer than before derivative of grinded brick. This layer lets the tennis player slide speeding up the game.
